  • Wireless Microphone & Receiver
  • Up to 9 Hours of News Style Shooting

Your project may fit these parameters perfectly, or we may need to make adjustments to accommodate you better.

I’d love to talk to discuss your project and its production needs. Set up a free 30-minute, no-pressure discovery call. I’m here when you’re ready 🙂

We offer both ENG & EFP packages for higher-end, stylized productions. To learn more about how these packages differ and how to decide which is best for your project, visit ENG VS EFP.

The project case studies below are designed to help you make informed decisions by opening up our video production process and sharing some cost-saving insights.

Carrow Real Estate Services

Project Objectives
Create a video tour of three of Carrow’s “Featured Properties.” These videos were designed to be featured on their website, emailed to their contact list, and placed in paid ads on Youtube and other social media platforms.

Shooting the Video
It took about eight hours to travel to and shoot multiple setups at each location. The client knew exactly what he wanted to showcase, so we only shot what would ultimately appear in the video.

Basic daylight fill lighting was used to balance exposure to windows and to compliment existing fixtures. No audio technician was needed for this project. The final price reflected this adjustment.

Editing
The client provided a voice-over script, and because we only shot setups that would appear in the final video, editing went relatively quick. Using the client’s script, we recorded a voice-over track and edited the visuals to that.

New York State Theater Institute – Community Awareness

Project Objectives
Create five videos 20 to 30-second videos to run on social in paid social media ads. These videos were designed to create awareness and remind the target audience of the possible closure of NYSTI, and its classroom support programs

We typically load equipment onto carts and can be in the first location within thirty minutes. Load in here took over an hour because access to the building meant navigating three different sets of stairs, and once in the lobby, we needed a full set of stairs to the second floor of a building with no elevator.

Shooting the Video
These simple straight-to-camera talking heads are lightly stylized with soft lighting and a soft focus background. While this is not typical ENG-style lighting, I included this here because we achieved these results with the ENG crew and time parameters outlined in this package.

Once set up, it took about four hours to shoot and another 90 minutes to break down and load out. The client knew exactly what he wanted to showcase so we only shot what would ultimately appear in the video. Basic daylight fill lighting was used to balance exposure to windows and to compliment existing fixtures. No audio technician was needed for this project. The final price reflected this adjustment.

Editing

The client knew exactly what he wanted and took edit notes while shooting. We also recorded the voice-over tag during the shoot. This made editing decisions very clear.  We added a lower third text overlay for each person, balanced audio levels, and adjusted color grading for the final product.

ALL FOR THE BIRDS

Project Objectives
Our goal was to create a mini-documentary that would include highlight Peter’s origin story and convey his passion for saving birds.  This was an all-volunteer collaborative effort with a local filmmaker organization, so we kept our project goals simple. I desired to teach filmmaking skills while also helping a local non-for-profit.

I included this project here because the group shot with available light and discovered the narrative while shooting, talking with Peter as he went about his day. While the group shot this project over two days, an experienced videographer and an audio technician could collect this volume of ENG footage in one nine-hour day.

Shooting an ENG Mini-Documentary
This is the equivalent of a long-form local news story where the producer doubles as an audio technician and the videographer doubles as a lighting tech. You’ll notice available lights and bounce boards for the interview. We shot all available light while collecting the b-roll footage. We could have added lights to make the interview look more styled and spent more time getting stylized shots of the birds but that would have added more time and personal.

Editing
How long a project like this is dependent on budget and that should be based on:
  • Where the video will be played
  • Who the audience and how many people will see it
  • What effect the video is designed to have on the audience (Is the goal to get them to take an action?)
  • How will the video will be properly promoted and it’s effects measured.
  • How many years the video will be actively working
A local news story can be edited in a couple of hours and using those techniques, a basic three-minute story could be cut using this footage in 8 – 12 hours. That said, identifying and cataloging the best sound bites and b-roll footage could take 10 hours, followed by another 30 hours to artfully cut the story.
These are the considerations you’ll be making when embarking on a project like this. Again this project is here because sometimes it makes sense to shoot and cut a quick story.
